Role Description: 

The K-8 Special Education Teacher will be responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to scholars with varying exceptionalities in various classroom settings. The K-2 Special Education Teacher possesses a deep understanding of diverse learning needs and is equipped to design and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to meet the unique requirements of each scholar. This role requires strong collaboration skills, effective communication abilities, and a commitment to creating an inclusive, rigorous, and supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities: 

  • Embody & Élan Academy’s mission, vision, and values;


    • Participate in an annual summer staff orientation and training;

    • Collaborate with scholars, parents, and other members of staff to develop Individual Education Plans (IEP)

    • Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned scholars and show written evidence of preparation as required.

    • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of scholars assigned.

    • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed, and assist special education scholars in regular classes with assignments.

    • Consult with paraeducators  regarding management of student behavior according to IEP; Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP.

    • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing; Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.

    • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of scholars.

    • Manage scholar  behavior and administer discipline, including intervening in crises and physically restraining scholars as necessary according to IEP.

    • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.

    • Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.

  • Qualifications: 


    Education Requirements:

    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university

    • Valid Louisiana Teaching Cerificate:  Special Education  

    • 2+ years of experience preferred
