Élan Academy Charter School is an academically challenging, disciplined, and joyful elementary school in New Orleans, LA. Through a classical curriculum, high-quality instruction, and leadership development, Élan Academy Charter School ensures that all scholars have the foundation necessary to thrive in secondary school, succeed in college, and access lives of opportunity.

 

We are seeking a School Nurse to provide appropriate health services. This includes counseling and resource referral assistance to scholars, parents and staff; case management of chronic disease; health teaching, and participation in mandated screening programs and as a member of school and IEP teams. Functions as a liaison between Élan Academy,  Orleans Parish Public Schools, and Orleans Parish Health Department, the scholar and his/her family, and the scholar’s health care provider. 

 

Responsibilities


Quantitative Outcomes


  • By October 31, 100% of scholars have up to date immunization records (or appropriate waivers or notifications of deficiency) on file with at least 95% of scholars having immunizations.
  • By Labor Day, 100% of all scholars have vision, hearing, and growth screenings.
  • At least 5 times a year, create and deliver learning sessions to parents, scholars, or staff to inform them about health issues, solutions, and resources.

Qualitative Outcomes


  • Plan and implement school health management protocols.
  • Develop procedures and provide for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses.
  • Serve as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.
  • Coordinate school and community health activities and serve as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community.
  • Create Emergency Health Plans for scholars in need.
  • Create Individual Health Plans for scholars in need.
  • Participate in the IEP plan development and meetings when appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with other school nurses to develop training programs for staff.
  • Obtain student's' health history, review and evaluate history and provide health assessments (with a special focus on scholars with regular medications, asthma, seizures, diabetes, and other identified health needs).
  • Maintain, evaluate and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of scholars
  • Screen and evaluate findings of deficit in vision, hearing, growth, etc.
  • Provide ongoing health counseling with scholars, parents, school personnel or health agencies
  • Utilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care of scholars

Qualifications

 

  • Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner in the state of Louisiana and holds an unrestricted license and two years of experience of pediatric nursing
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR
  • Experience working with school-aged children or teenagers
  • Certification in Basic Life Support and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Ability to bill for Medicaid strongly preferred, but not required
